@Appleblossom see this really angers me - we have such a combative mainstream culture here in australia - i had a friend who got cancer in his early 20s and tried to keep working while he faced treatment. he managed to do the work fine but burst into tears on two occasions in the office AND THEY SACKED HIM.
if the australian workplace too closely resembles a boxing ring and i am the punching bag over and over again, i won't participate, much as i'd like a career. with what the mental health system has put me through it's highly questionable whether i owe society anything for my pension anyway, but, like almost all human beings, i WANT to work, and hence do as much volunteer work as i can, monotonous though i can be. 2016 is actually shaping up very nicely workwise, and should be very rewarding, but it's all volunteer work.

"Combative" is a good term for it. I can understand your anger.
As you said before, it is paticularly bad here. I have long pondered why Australians are so rude. It has taken me a very long time to meet sensitive and kind Australians ... my whole life, but I finally am. It is partly the convict, partly tough living conditions, partly the prod/mick divide, partly money and just the
"get ahead .. doesnt matter if you step all over others" mentality.

Agreed entirely. i find it a bit rich when they even give me curry in volunteer jobs but nevermind. when i worked overseas good volunteer work led to more responsibility and, eventually, a job but the whole mainstream australian culture is one big barney. i pity the poor aboriginal people, having to cope with us. i've just had to delay starting my new job by two weeks because of two appointments that can't be changed. how annoying. if i don't get more 'in-house' volunteer work i WILL go mad. i've only written six articles this year and i have no deadline, really, for my books and it is SO hard to self-motivate at home alone and then (mostly) sit in at night alone. never mind. thanks for the company guys; i've got to go - i'm going to a lecture tonight, which should be interesting. cheers and god bless 🙂

Wow, @Shaz51, awesome photo. Makes me think of @Crazy_Bug_Lady. She might like seeing this too. Is the photo a macro of a fly of some kind? Thanks for posting.

I am very uncomfortable about the employment series at the sane website. there is a clear underlying implication in the topic matters that people with mental illnesses don't seem to want to work which is incorrect and offensive.
i work about five volunteer jobs (some of it very intensive) and get little but insults for such including by my 'employers'. not good.

Hi @Terry, as the person who started this 'Night Shift' discussion thread, I ask that we take this work discussion over the new thread started by @Appleblossom called To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?. It's specifically to continue discussion about the 'Why work?' discussion from yesterday. She and I have already been discussing some things there. Cheers!
